PARKLANDS UNITED SPORTS CLUB

FORMERLY

NORTH BEACH SOCCER CLUB

Celebrates 40 years of sports in the local community

The club was formed in 1967 by four enthusiastic young men that were keen to play social Sunday soccer against hotels and business houses. As no team shirts were available it was suggested that all players try and find some sort of yellow shirt and they arrived at the first game with shirts from faded to gaudy and only vaguely yellow. The biggest problem the team encountered was the significant expense of a soccer ball. In fact they had to borrow a ball for the first couple of games. A ball in those days cost about a weeks pay, so balls were not as plentiful as they are today.

In 1979 the club chairman wrote in the annual report:

“I would like to see further advances made for the future of our club – our own grounds, teams in the Saturday competition (CFA) and I hope that this club should not, like many others, get too distant from it’s members.”

From that point in time the club has expanded to having teams in a range of competitions:

1979 2007
Canterbury Sunday Soccer League Mainland Football
Canterbury Junior Football Association Canterbury Junior Football
Canterbury Women's Football Association Canterbury Women's Football
  Junior Netball
  Senior Netball
  Junior Cricket
  Senior Cricket
Kiwi Football (4 to 7 years)
  And a Touch Module

The Chairman’s challenge has well and truly been answered by many dedicated members, coaches and committees.
